2026 Recipients
Hannah Rae Armstrong
Hannah Rae Armstrong is a writer and policy adviser specializing in peace and security. She has two decades of field-based experience researching in North and West Africa. Her work, which includes narrative nonfiction and policy advocacy, has appeared in the Guardian Longread, Foreign Affairs, MIT Tech Review, National Geographic, and Le Monde. She lives in Dakar, Senegal. She received a 2026 Silvers Grant for her forthcoming article in Equator, “Escape from Kidal.”
Abhrajyoti Chakraborty
Abhrajyoti Chakraborty writes essays, criticism, profiles and fiction. His work has appeared in The Guardian, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, The New Republic, Liberties and elsewhere. He was a Provost’s fellow at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was also a recipient of the Deena Davidson Friedman Prize for Fiction. He received a 2026 Silvers Grant for an essay on the painter Amrita Sher-Gil, to be published in Liberties.
Meredith Jackson
Meredith Jackson is a journalist and writer based in Montevideo, Uruguay. She has written for The Dial, New Lines Magazine, Dispatch and other publications. She received a 2026 Silvers Grant for her forthcoming feature, “Data Center Colonialism,” to be published in Dispatch.
Darryl Pinckney
Darryl Pinckney is the author of two novels as well as the memoir Come Back in September: A Literary Education on West Sixty-Seventh Street, Manhattan (2022). For the Review, as well as Harper’s, Granta, and The New Yorker, he has written extensively about American literature, black American culture, YouTube, James Baldwin, Obama’s presidency, and Elizabeth Hardwick. He received a 2026 Silvers Grant for his forthcoming memoir, And Some There Will Be: My Search for Family in American Slavery, to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Michelle García
Michelle García is an award-winning journalist and essayist. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Baffler, and PBS, among other publications. She is a contributor to “Trumpism, Mexican Americans and the Struggle for Latinx Citizenship.” Her work has been supported by the Watchdog Writers Group and the Fund for Investigative Journalism. She received the Silvers grant for her forthcoming book, Ánima Sola: A Lonely Soul’s Descent Into Borders to be published by Viking.

Sarah Esther Maslin
Sarah Esther Maslin has spent thirteen years reporting on the long aftermath of the El Mozote massacre; her in-progress manuscript received a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and was shortlisted for a J. Anthony Lukas Award. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, The Nation, The New Republic, and other publications. She was a correspondent for The Economist in Brazil and Central America and now lives in Mexico.
Madison Mainwaring
Madison Mainwaring is an Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Notre Dame and a MacDowell Fellow. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s, The Atlantic, The Economist, and The Paris Review Daily. Her scholarly monograph on women and nineteenth-century French ballet is under contract with Yale University Press, and she received a 2026 Silvers Grant for a book on the women of the French New Wave.
Gazelle Mba
Gazelle Mba is a writer and researcher based in New York. She has contributed to the London Review of Books, The New York Times, The Financial Times, Bookforum, and The Nation among other publications. She received a 2026 Silvers Grant for her forthcoming essay on Nigerian Futures: Expectations of Modernity in the age of Dangote, to be published in Granta.
Joshua Bennett
Xan Rice
Xan Rice is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, the Atlantic, and Granta. He was previously a foreign correspondent of the Times (of London), the Guardian and the Financial Times, and features editor of the New Statesman magazine. He received a 2026 Silvers Grant for his forthcoming article on Guyana’s oil industry, to be published as a Guardian Long Read.
Jack Hanson
Jack Hanson’s writing has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, New York Magazine, The Nation, and elsewhere. He teaches at Columbia. He received a 2026 Silvers grant for his forthcoming essay on AI’s politics of consciousness, to be published in The Drift.
Morley Musick
Morley Musick is a co-founder of Mouse Arts and Letters, a social space in Chicago, and Editor-in-Chief of Mouse Magazine. He writes a city life column for n+1. He received a 2026 Silvers Grant for his forthcoming investigative series on the metal supply chain, to be published by n+1 and Signal Hill.
